Training Facilities
Classrooms
A range of classrooms are variously equipped with up to date computer, power point, video, GMDSS simulator, and other teaching aids.
Lecture theatre
A modern, fully equipped 96 seat lecture theatre is a valuable additional teaching resource.
Workshops and Laboratories
A range of well equipped engineering/electrical/electronic workshops and laboratories provide all the required facilities to support nautical studies and engineering provision.
Seamanship Facilities
Facilities provide for the teaching of basic seamanship and fishing skills, and various short courses.
Full Mission Bridge Simulator
The very latest Transas NTPro 4000 full mission bridge simulator has recently been fitted, with three bridges, and over forty different ship types and sea areas. As well as navigational and ship handling facilities, the simulator is also fitted with 4 Transas TGS 4000 GMDSS simulator stations. The simulator is capable of delivering training at every level, from standard NARAS courses up to advanced ship handling and pilot training, including interactive tug scenarios, and has a unique three screen de-brief facility believed to be the only one of its kind in the UK. Engine room, cargo and ballast simulation facilities are also available.
Training Vessels and Workboats
The location of the College, overlooking East Voe, provides ideal opportunities for students to undertake training afloat in the training vessels and workboats, which are operated by the College for various purposes.
The Moder-Dy is a 13.7 metre twin-screw aluminium motor yacht equipped with a comprehensive set of marine electronics and is routinely used for the training of students in the use of marine electronics (including ECDIS), and some survey work.
The Atlantia is a 10 metre trawler equipped with a variety of commercial fishing equipment, and is used for testing new fishing equipment, research and training of students in safe operations on fishing vessels.
In addition, the College operates a 10 metre fish farm vessel, an Avon 5.4 meter RIB and a 5 meter Polar Cirkel farm tender.
John Goodlad Centre
This is a well-equipped learning resource centre with additional classrooms, computer facilities, laboratories, photocopying facilities, and the library.
Library
The Library is located on the first floor of the John Goodlad Centre and has three main areas available to all staff and students. The main section houses a well stocked selection of books supporting the courses available at the college, including Nautical Studies, Engineering and Marine Sciences. On the upper mezzanine level there are a number of academic and scientific journals, maritime and fisheries newspapers and periodicals, subject orientated magazines, and videos available to students. All staff and students of NAFC have access to computing facilities in the library, along with a number of networked on-line resources via the UHI Millennium Institute.
