Scottish Progression Award in Aquaculture

The SPA is designed to allow greater access for young people (normally S3 and S4 school pupils) to vocational and enterprise training. The SPA Aquaculture course is designed to meet the needs of the aquaculture industry and to provide a suitable first qualification for those wishing to enter the industry. The SPA Aquaculture course gives candidates the opportunity to learn about the industry and to gain practical hands-on experience in realistic working situations.

Course content and times

The course comprises of an introductory unit, an enterprise unit and a work experience unit. In addition to this the students study two types of fish farming in depth (salmon farming and mussel farming). The course is delivered one afternoon a week, during the school term, over two years. Classes run from 13.50 to 16.20 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Entrance requirements

No formal qualifications are required but candidates will normally be asked to attend an interview prior to acceptance onto the course. Candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest in the subject and be prepared to make the necessary time and work commitments to the course.
