Sathappan Saravanan
He holds a first class B.Sc (Zoology) and M.Sc (Marine Biology and Oceanography) degree from Madurai Kamaraj University and Annamalai University in India. He always considered marine science as a fascinating subject and he wanted to pursue his career in Marine Science/ Aquaculture and he has done his research project work in Marine Microbiology. After completing his MSc, he worked as an aquaculture technician for two years in a shrimp farm in India. He wanted to travel and learn more about fisheries and aquaculture in other parts of the world, so he came up to Shetland in 1998 and did an HNC in Fisheries Science and Technology. This helped him to gain knowledge about fisheries and aquaculture practices in the North Atlantic. Although it was strange for him to come all the way from Madras (India) to live in Shetland, very soon he got acclimatised to the weather and the friendliness of the Shetland people has kept him here all these years.
He took up the job as a trainee technician to work at the newly built hatchery in 2000 and since 2001 he has been working as a full time hatchery technician. Previously along with other hatchery staff, he has been involved in cod, halibut, lobsters and wolf fish culture. He is more involved in live feed culture for feeding the fish larvae, lobster culture and restocking programme and assisting/supervising work placement students, assisting fellow staff members in conducting research and practical classes for students. He has been involved in the delivery of MSc course previously and currently he is involved in the delivery of the SPA (Scottish Progression Award) course run jointly with the Scalloway secondary school.
Saro enjoys working at the NAFC Marine hatchery and to be part of the Marine Science team in serving the local aquaculture and fisheries industry.
