A native of Shetland, I moved to Edinburgh with my parents at the age of 12. On leaving school, I began a 4-year apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering with Ferranti Ltd, combined with study at Edinburgh's Napier College. On successful completion of my apprentice training I spent six more years with Ferranti employed as a Jig & Tool Design Draughtsman.

In 1976 I returned to Shetland with my wife and joined Norscot Oil Services, a newly established company providing a comprehensive engineering service to the Oil industry, Sullom Voe Terminal and Local Engineering industry. I was appointed Production Engineer in 1979, responsible for; the compilation and submission of tenders, management of industrial painting section, preparation and control of design drawings, job packages and Q/A documentation. I retained this post until 1994, following a take over by OIL Ltd in 1984, to gain a further 18 years industrial experience in a diverse engineering environment.

I entered employment in Further Education with Shetland College in 1995, as an Engineering Technician, and was promoted to the post of Engineering Lecturer in 1999. I became Lecturer at NAFC following a transfer of services from Shetland College in September 2001.

In my spare time I enjoy sailing and, for a number of years, have been active in the organisation and provision of sail training on behalf of local sailing clubs.
