Appointed as aquaculture development manager in May 2007, Kenny has always had an interest in marine life and this led to his initial involvement in the salmon industry in 1982. By 1985, he was managing director of Laxfirth Voe Salmon and went on to serve on the executive committee of Shetland Salmon Farmers' Association (now Shetland Aquaculture) during the late eighties and early nineties - becoming increasingly familiar with the wide range of challenges and opportunities open to the then new industry.
Kenny strongly believes that the islands' aquaculture industry has much to offer in terms of employment and income. He feels that aquaculture in Shetland is still in its early years and that, as with any new sector, there are still issues to deal with and overcome. The food industry in Shetland must stand strong against worldwide competition from countries such as Norway and Chile for salmon production, and Denmark, Belgiu, Holland, France and Spain for mussels and other shellfish. In his opinion, it is of utmost importance that the quality of Shetland's produce and service is first class, professional and effective.
He believes that the aquaculture industry needs the focused support of the NAFC Marine Centre to help foster a commitment to quality, to assist with training and research into areas which are of practical benefit to all concerned, and to diversify into other species. He is enthusiastic about the future and will play his part in the development and continual improvement of the aquaculture industry.
