Simulation allows seafarers of all standards to experience and refine every aspect of navigation and ship handling - from basic watchkeeping to the use of the latest electronic navigation aids and advanced ship handling practice. The ability to practice routine and emergency responses in a safe but realistic environment will improve expertise and allow planning of procedures to deal with emergency scenarios which could arise onboard.
Capabilities
The simulator at SSNS uses 3 bridges which can be operated independently or interact in any chosen configuration. Students may undertake multi-vessel exercises, the same exercise simultaneously, or interact in complex manoeuvring and berthing situations with tugs.
To assist in ship handling exercises, bridges 2 and 3 can be configured as tugs, with Voith and ASD azimuth controls available in bridges 2 and 3. The instructor can vary every aspect of the experience, such as time of day or night, traffic levels, weather conditions, visibility, tides, currents, sea, swell, wind strength and direction, location and ship type. The trainees experience realistic simulation of motion and noise levels appropriate to sea conditions and engine settings of the vessel.
From Sullom Voe to Sydney, we can offer more than 40 international ports in which to conduct realistic exercises and a fleet of more than fifty different ship types either in loaded or ballast condition. From a small patrol craft to a 330 metre Ultra Large Crude Carrier, the trainees can experience and appreciate navigation on vessels with widely differing responses. All ship models are produced using sea trial data from existing vessels to ensure that their responses are valid and realistic; new ship models can also be developed to meet client requirements.
Flexibility
Flexibility is the key to our service. We offer tailored packages to suit our customer's requirements. Every attempt is made to construct a training package to best suit the customer. We can also develop and implement specific ports to client requirements with their co-operation.
De-brief Facility
One of the most valuable aspects of a simulator is its ability to record and then review all aspects of an exercise. Our simulator has a highly advanced 3 screen de-briefing facility allowing detailed analysis of individual student responses, and ship movements. Exercises can be re-played and analysed accordingly, in addition, this facility gives SSNS the ability to investigate, test and develop strategies for dealing with maritime emergencies.
