SHOAL

NAFC has provided extensive support for the Shetland Oceans Alliance (SHOAL), a partnership between the Shetland Islands Council and the local fishing industry, to promote the industry's interests at national and European level. This has included the production of a range of leaflets and other lobbying materials, responding to consultations on behalf of SHOAL, and participating in meetings with politicians and other parties.

Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation

The Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO)  was established in 1996 to manage Shetland's shellfish fisheries (within the 6 mile limit). The necessary powers were granted in 1999 through the Shetland Shellfish Regulating Order, making the SSMO the first (and to date only) locally-based fisheries management organisation in Scotland.

NAFC has been a partner in the SSMO since its formation, nominating one of the organisation's 10 directors. In addition to providing scientific support to the SSMO, NAFC has also provided considerable organisational and management.
